About Gold Garden Restaurant

Gold Garden Restaurant, nestled in the vibrant heart of Cheung Sha Wan, offers a genuine taste of Hong Kong’s beloved cha chaan teng culture. This traditional-style Hong Kong café is renowned primarily for its egg tarts, a treat that has captivated locals and visitors alike. The moment you step inside, the bright, clean space with cream and white decor provides a welcoming, modern twist on the classic tea house ambiance, setting the stage for an authentic culinary experience.

What truly makes Gold Garden stand out is their mastery of the egg tart - a delicate balance of creamy, rich custard filling encased in a perfectly flaky yet sturdy crust. Each tart arrives piping hot, the filling slightly bouncy and less sweet than typical versions, which brings a refreshing lightness to the palate. It’s easy to understand why customers describe it as one of the best egg tarts in Hong Kong, worthy of accolades and repeat visits. The custard holds firm when shaken, showcasing expert baking skills and attention to detail.

Beyond the egg tarts, Gold Garden offers other classic Hong Kong pastries like the Bo Luo Bao (pineapple bun), and while some items receive mixed feedback - such as the chicken pies - the overall menu complements the tea house vibe. Pairing the tarts with a hot milk tea creates an ideal Hong Kong-style tea break, evoking the bustling yet intimate atmosphere of local life.

Though the café is slightly tucked away and a short walk from the Cheung Sha Wan MRT, the journey is well worth it. Credit cards are accepted, adding convenience, and the nearby takeaway stall caters to those on the move. Be mindful, however, that the egg tarts may not count towards the in-house minimum spending limit, a detail visitors should note ahead to avoid confusion.

In sum, Gold Garden Restaurant offers more than just food; it delivers a rich sensory experience grounded in Hong Kong’s culinary tradition. For anyone seeking an authentic taste of local flavors with a standout signature dish, this place is a must-visit hidden gem.

We went there in response to a video about their egg tarts. It was a bit of a walk from the subway in the heat. The egg tarts were worth the trouble. We had 2 each. I gave them a 9 and my wife gave them a 10.

Egg tarts are fantastic, the best we tried in anywhere. Chicken pies not really good imo. Credit cards accepted. Octopus not. No queue for takeaway.

This is a very local Hong Kong Tea house that the average tourist will not be able to find we and would not have given it much thought either. However, when my local friend said he will bring me out for tea and brought me here, I was amazed by what I ate. Location – Take a train to Cheung Sha Wan MRT station, Exit C2 and walk for 5 mins to reach Golden Garden Restaurant. They are usually busy and do expect a short queue during the peak hours, but it moves fast. Restaurant – Brightly lid, white + cream furnishing gives it a grand modern look. Super clean , well-spaced tables settings can comfortably sit 5⃣0⃣ pax. (See my pics and video ) The front entrance has a pop-up stall for all the takeaway orders and right at the back is where the baking takes place. Food – We went for tea break, so we had the famous egg tarts and the Bo Luo Bao . To be fair, I ate before I checked out the Google Reviews, so I went with no expectations. The egg tarts knocked me silly! It was delicious!! The filling was creamy, rich but not overwhelming and the crust was fluffy but firm. If you shake it, it will slide side to side but will not crumble. It well deserves the hype, and I can easily rank this as the top 3 Egg Tarts I ever had. I washed it down with a hot milk tea and walked away genuinely believing that it is one of the very best tea breaks that I had in Hong Kong till date.

Famous for egg tarts made in the traditional way, this cafe has the local bustling vibe you want when you're trying HK food. The environment here is clean and simple. For me, the egg tarts were tasty especially since they were served warm and fresh. The attitude of my waiter didn't make a good first impression on me, particularly when I spoke in Cantonese and he would only reply in English. But life goes on. Future visitors should note that even though 2 egg tarts cost 22 HKD, and the signs say you must order a minimum of 21 HKD to eat inside, the egg tarts don't count towards that minimum cost... So you essentially have to buy something in addition to the tarts, or just buy the egg tarts as takeaway. That was disappointing to find out, as it must be a very common occurrence, and yet they don't put it in writing (it seems it's not written in either English or Chinese). On the bright side, credit cards are accepted here, even for a payment like mine of just 46 HKD. Based on my first impression, I'm glad I visited, but I will keep trying other egg tart places as well.

fresh egg tarts egg tart was piping hot when served, less pastry crust and more heavy on the custard filling. compared to other popular tarts it’s less sweet and has more of a bouncy texture. also very cheap, would recommend :)

I visited Gold Garden Cafe in Sham Shui Po (G/F, 314 Castle Peak Road) and it’s the real deal. Most of the customers were locals - always a good sign. The egg tarts are a must-try: buttery, flaky crust with a silky, warm egg custard that’s not too sweet. Absolutely delicious. I went for breakfast, and the classic Hong Kong breakfast set hit the spot. Think instant noodles with ham/spam, scrambled eggs, buttered bun or macaroni soup, and milk tea. Simple, comforting, and very local. The place has that old-school cha chaan teng vibe - no frills, busy, and efficient. Service is fast and direct. Don’t expect fancy decor, just honest, tasty food. If you want to eat like a local in Sham Shui Po, don’t miss their egg tarts and breakfast sets. Would I go back? Definitely.

Top 3 egg tarts in HK. Must try if you love puff pastry egg tarts. We come in the morning most of the time so no need worry they run out. Early afternoon I think still ok as we keep seeing kitchen bring out fresh trays.
